First Look Photo: Shelter from the Storm

December 13, 2017

Some people will do anything to keep the snow off their head, like this woman and her umbrella.

First Look Photo: Watch for All

January 25, 2017

Today’s photo was chosen because it looked more like the on location ads I used to see in magazines, all the time.  The girl is fashionable, determined, and business like.  The man, while not destitute, he is a wanderer, with his backpack, and fairly new clothes, which seems to suggest he’s just starting on an outdoors adventure.  They both were walking under the Rolex sign,  and I imagined a banner underneath the picture saying, “A watch for every lifestyle.”

First Look Photo: Winter Tourists

January 11, 2017

I was on a street photography walk, yesterday, and was asked to take a photo of two girls from New York.  They were visiting Portland for a few days, and wanted a picture of both of them.  When I saw a painting on the wall, of a nice mountain scene.  I asked to take their picture, and used the painting.  Instead of a city picture, it looked like they were getting ready to ski.

Out of all the shots I took, I like this the best.

Photo Friday: Not Having It

June 17, 2016

Last Sunday marked another year of documenting the Old Port Festival.  Besides photos of food, entertainment, and merchants, I enjoyed photographing the visitors, some in costume, and some not in costume.  I even found Obi Wan walking around.

Out of all the photos of people, I found one particular shot to be especially compelling.  It was towards the end, and I stopped to take a breather on a grass mound, with another photographer.  In all directions there was a sea of people; no one seeming to stand out.  From around the corner of one of the buildings, a man walked with his daughter on his shoulders, holding a balloon, and looking miserable.  I had no idea if her mood had to do with the noise, the crowds, or just hurt feet, but her position, and expression made her This week’s shot of the week.

Before I forget about it, she was the only one looking in the camera’s direction.

Whacky Wednesday: 4 sentence fairytale

January 21, 2015

As with any goal, there should be some fun involved, and it’s no different with writing goals.  I decided that on my blog, for my writing I should devote one day to the fun side.  Every Wednesday will be dedicated to something whacky and fun.  I am going to challenge you to the same fun in the comments.  I would love to see how you turn writing fun; so I’ll keep these posts short.

Today is dedicated to the 4 sentence fairytale.  The rules are simple.  Four sentences, a complete fairytale, and where applicable, a twist ending.

Here’s mine titled Let’s Eat Pie.

Once upon a time, a fairy loved a boy.
The boy met a girl, and the fairy became jealous.
The fairy turned the girl into a pumpkin, and the boy was impressed
Now the boy and the fairy are married and enjoying pumpkin pie every night.

Stealth mode

In this shot, I really liked the color scheme this mother & daughter had going.  This was taken in the grocery store, where cameras are frowned on.  I don’t usually encourage breaking the rules with cameras, but once in a while there are just pictures you have to get.

In order to get the shot, without drawing attention to yourself, turn off the flash, and keep the camera at a level where there is no attention drawn to it.

Feature video Friday: Who Needs Hands

July 6, 2012

This is a song created by the very talented Danna Richards.  This was her response to a contest to see what people can do without hands.  I hope you enjoy it.

Day 77: Need to Bust Out

March 11, 2012

Need to Bust Out

I took life too serious

With nothing too frilly,

I need to bust out

And do something silly.

Don’t forget, I post videos  that explain the poems on http://www.youtube.com/user/thedailypoet2
